I chose my sources listed in the above annotated bibliography for various reasons relating to the topic of my next essay. To reiterate, my working thesis is, “Damage to the environment is a problem because it harms human health, therefore people must strive to protect the well-being of the environment to protect the well-being of themselves.”

I chose the article “Retail Strategy: A New Focus on Hazardous Waste Regulations” because I wanted to use an official source from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA is a major antagonist to Lee Knowles in Friendswood. Although they are supposed to protect human health and the environment, they stood in Lee’s way of actually achieving that protection. This article is from the EPA’s blog, and it sheds some light on one of the ways the EPA is trying to protect in real life. It will help me make my point and may even help draw connections between the issues in Friendswood and issues in real life.

In addition, I chose the article “Company Says It’s Been Indicted for California Oil Spill” because I wanted to use a current event from the New York Times in my essay. The situation here is similar to the incident in Friendswood, which will help me draw connections between the two. A company is said to be responsible for an oil spill, and it will face consequences under the law. This situation can also help make my point by acting as an example for a careless company harming the environment.

Finally, I chose the article “Point: Businesses That Create Toxic Wastes Should Pay The Cost of Cleanup” because it seems to relate to the topic of my essay, the novel Friendswood, and the previous article I found. This is a point I could bring up as part of the solution to the problem I present. Taft Properties in Friendswood should have to pay the cost of their carelessness, too. And the company discussed in the article “Company Says It’s Been Indicted for California Oil Spill” is going to have to pay the cost of cleanup, and then some for its criminal charges. This strategy could make business more aware of their effect on the environment.
